Pubs
Tiger Bay and the Docks was not short of pubs – at least 50 in total.
The (original) Mount Stuart or the Packet were just outside the docks gates and regular first stops after a sailor had landed or for the trimmer who had just finished his day loading coal into the hold of a ship.
The newly arrived sailor would have had plenty of opportunity to visit more pubs on his way to his lodgings in Tiger Bay – there were at least 22 pubs on Bute Street alone. He would need to be careful that he didn’t run into one of the “scarlet women” inviting him to “a party” as at the end of the night all the cash he had from his long voyage could be gone.
